The module introduces students to the basics of corpus linguistics and allows them to practice its methods through extensive corpus-assisted discourse analysis work. The acquisition of the competences and capacities outlined in the learning outcomes is favoured by the provision of hands-on activities in which theoretical notions and methods are applied to a) mediated varieties of English (English as a lingua franca, translated English, learner English vs. native English) and b) text types that the students are interested in or familiar with (such as blogs, political speeches, press conferences, newspaper articles, etc.). Particular attention is given to how ‘non-obvious’ meanings are communicated and interpreted, that is, forms of meaning which may be uncovered by corpus linguistics techniques but which may not be self-evident to other forms of reading. 

The module, which aims to increase the students' awareness of their own expressive means and to improve their discourse analytical skills, has two parts. Part A, taught by Silvia Bernardini, covers the theoretical and methodological bases of corpus linguistics, applying them to a range of varieties of English, including mediated ones (translated English, non-native English). Part B, taught by Alan Partington, deepens and extends the competences acquired in part A, applying them to corpus-assisted discourse analysis of selected text types.

Lastly, academic writing competences are specifically focused upon in a 20-hour seminar ("lettorato"), devoted to them.

Il corso affronterà una gamma diversificata di generi e argomenti testuali, sia di natura editoriale che semi-specializzata. In parallelo verranno presentate risorse di supporto alla traduzione (principalmente motori di ricerca e corpora) e tecniche traduttive (riformulazione, revisione e auto-revisione) applicabili ai diversi compiti traduttivi, stimolando la riflessione critica sull'adeguatezza delle stesse in base alle tipologie testuali affrontate. 

Nello specifico il modulo affronterà traduzioni di:

reportage e altri generi giornalistici (ad es. articoli di opinione), su cui si svolgeranno attività di riformulazione, supportate da un uso consapevole dei motori di ricerca e delle varie risorse traduttive disponibili online;

testi di natura editoriale (saggistica e fiction), su cui si svolgeranno attività di revisione e auto-revisione;

testi semi-specialistici di natura aziendale (ad es. comunicati stampa, report di sostenibilità ambientale), per cui ci si avvarrà di metodi e strumenti per la costruzione e la consultazione di corpora elettronici a sostegno del processo di traduzione.

The "Terminology and Information Mining" (TerMine) module is part of the "Technology for Translation" course. It has two components

The first component presents the main online and offline tools and methods to retrieve and process information, both for specialised translation and revision tasks, and specifically for terminological and terminographic applications. Following an overview of advanced techniques for web searching using search engines, special emphasis will be placed on the construction and use of electronic corpora, both specialised and general-purpose ones, and on advanced methods for text manipulation and corpus consultation (regular expressions, Corpus Query Language).

The second component focuses on the theoretical bases of terminology, as well as the main methods for the retrieval of terminology in specialized domains and its systematization into conceptual systems. The main terminographic tools for the creation and management of simple and complex terminology databases are then presented. Special attention is paid to methods and resources which ensure complete interoperability with the workflows and tools presented during the CatLoc and MatPed modules.
